Presenting an Aesthetic Image
Macau is a city emerging from its cocoon to unveil lavish colors and interwoven
shapes which simultaneously welcome and excite anyone fortunate enough to
partake of this sensory feast! It is difficult to imagine this geographical
tapestry
as tops on the list of densely populated areas, but it is. The reason for
not noticing all the people is the expert placement and large numbers of attractive
gardens throughout Macau.
Thanks to their depth of appreciation for aesthetic beauty and balance in
natural environments, the Chinese and Portuguese have combined their landscaping
talents
to establish and maintain attractive green spaces even in the busiest urban
neighborhoods of Macau. Eastern serpentine bridges over lotus ponds with
brightly colored carp
swimming languorously below and weatherworn rocks strategically placed midst
bamboo and pine groves provide a sense of a much larger lake within a forest
of serenity holding surprises just around the bend. Western geometric definition
of flower beds combined with ornate fountains, theme-oriented mosaic patterns
in the calcada paths and busts of historical figures adjoin government buildings
of the city. A mixture of rich heritage and astute composition have turned
this city into a wonderland of gardens to visit.
At any time of the day you'll find serenity and peacefulness under the shade
of a banyon tree, or enjoy a cooling mist from one of the myriad of fountains
of Macau.
Sun Yat Sen Park, looking out at China's Zhu Hai from the northern edge of
Macau, is one of the latest additions to this collection. This fantastic
combination of flora and water zones rests atop what used to be a site for
discarding waste.
Recycling has never been better expressed. In the heart of the city lies
Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, the most Chinese of all, yet also holding a western style
home
built by a wealthy Chinese merchant in the 19th century. A venture to Coloane's
Seac Pai Van Park includes not only outdoor wonders, but indoor displays
of
traditional farming techniques and exhibits from the Islands Municpal Council's
research
laboratories. These include indigenous medicinal plants as well as explanations
for herbal remedies, reflecting the importance of traditional Chinese medicine
in this region.
Whatever your interests concerning flowers and plant life, outdoor sculptures
and cultural expressions - Macau offers something for everyone to appreciate
in the countless gardens and green spaces all around the city!
